A typical pigging system consists of a launcher at one end of a pipping system and a receiver or pig stopper at the other end. In between the launcher and receiver (or pig stopper), sometime a T-valve or middle station is required to direct liquid into intermediate tanks.
A pigging process is done by sending a pig through the pipe with compressed air to ensure no residual oil remain in the pipping system. This process ensures the integrity of the pipe cleanliness, consequently, prevents cross-contamination between different lube oil formulae and minimizes the risk of product mixing, which could result in inconsistent or lube oil not meeting specifications.
A contaminated lube oil could cost thousands of dollars in wasted product and lost customers and consequently lost revenue and profit.
